As the leaves start to change on the trees, I can see winter quickly approaching. Then I start to wonder what I will have to do to get myself ready for winter. One thing I dread having to do every year is getting my car ready for the winter roads.
I live in Pennsylvania, so driving in the winter can be pretty brutal. The roads are often icy, and if you live in the country like I do, it can sometimes be drastic trying to get out of a mile long driveway. I am just going to give a few tips on how to get your vehicle in check for the winter months.
It might be expensive, but the first thing you want to do is make sure you have good winter tires on your car. If you can't afford to buy brand new winter tires for your car, you can always try to find some used ones that will have better tread than what’s on it now. Having tires with little or no tread can be very hazardous when driving in the winter. Next you should upgrade your windshield wipers.
I would recommend buying blades that specially made for snow and ice. I think that Rain-X brand is a very reliable wiper. You should typically get your oil changed around every 3000 miles, but I definitely think you should get the oil changed before winter. On that note, make sure you check all your fluids. It would also be a good idea to ask your mechanic if there is any maintenance you should get done to your heater/defroster to make sure you don't run in to any problems when it's below zero outside.
The coldest months of the year can be very hard on a vehicle. It is really important that you make sure you and your car is prepared for it. Not being prepared can sometimes cause future problems for your car. If I am forgetting anything, please remind me of some more good tips. If you live in a place where you don't get bad winters, then your lucky!
