Decal Junky Custom Car Window Decals Personalized Interview

By Interviewer at 08/05/07 14:44

Name of your website?

Decal Junky Custom Car Window Decals Personalized

Your name?

Suzanne

Your Location (city, etc)

Columbus

What inspired you to launch your own website?

Customers in our sign shop asking us to make the custom car decals because they were so hard to find.

When did you launch your first website, and what was it?

1993, Decal Junky Stick 'Em Up! still going strong. We make custom car window decals and personalized license plates.

How did you decide on a name for your website?

Brainstormed different names to try to come up with something catchy and easy to remember.

Please give us a short summary of your website?

Decal Junky sells custom car window decals cut any size. 1000s of custom vinyl stickers personalized with your text, cut with etched glass vinyl or select from a variety of colors applied to a personalized license plates.

What makes it different from other, similar offerings?

Decal Junky offers personalization on every decal that we sell. The decals are offered in a variety of colors including etched glass. We don't complicate things, we try to keep it as simple as possible for the end user. Not a lot of bells and whistles just easy to use and the best customer service. We treat all of our customers the way we want to be treated. That is something that is really hard to find these days, especially online.

What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)

We will probably keep making decals until we are too old or get ready to retire. We will then turn the business over to our children to continue to serve our loyal customers.

How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?

Maintaing the site takes many hours. I have worked on computers since the 80's and enjoy it very much. My first computer job I worked on a Mac Classic. I still have that computer today and it still works like a charm. I love the challenges involved.

If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?

I would probably hire some of the best SEO people I could find to free up much of my time to pursue other aspects of the business that I enjoy such as adding new products and traveling to internet seminars to learn as much as I can.

If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?

Yes, we have a determination to be the best that we can be. Where there is a will there is a way and I personally believe that we as individuals can accomplish the impossible if we are committed and have the determination to do so. We have a local University that has an arts program and there are plenty of students that need jobs and internships in the summer months.

What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?

Click fraud is a nightmare. Even with proof we were unable to recover our losses. Some of the best and most valuable lessons that we learn usually hit us in the pocket book. We learned the value of organic search engine optimization.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Learning how to choose the right companies to help with marketing. There are so many sharks out there, you have to learn who to trust to do the best job for your company.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Organic search engine optimization. Also our customers talk about us in their online blogs and message boards. That has generated a lot more traffic than I every expected that it would.

How has running your website differed from your expectations?

Running and maintaining a website consumes a lot more time than I ever realized it would. When you operate a successful business online you work twenty four hours a day seven days a week. When you are away you are anticipating getting back. A lot can happen online in just a matter of minutes. I like to be available to my customers at all times.

How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?

We have been doing business online since 1993. We will continue our online business until we get ready to retire and then we will turn it over to our children to continue to service our loyal customer base. If the site is not making money I know I need to work harder and change some things that are not working.

What is your website address?
