Wisconsin Used Cars Interview

By Interviewer at 07/29/07 16:15

Name of your website?

Wisconsin Used Cars

Your name?

Dan Ruscoe

Your Location (city, etc)

Green Bay

What inspired you to launch your own website?

The need to find a decent used car coupled with the lack of good, reliable used car resources for Wisconsin.

When did you launch your first website, and what was it?

Summer, 2002. It was a directory of camping sites.

How did you decide on a name for your website?

The name describes what the website specializes in.

Please give us a short summary of your website?

My website collects used car listings from dealers all over Wisconsin and groups them into one big, searchable database.

What makes it different from other, similar offerings?

When researching used car dealers, I found most online resources were either out of date or just plain wrong. Many also just listed dealer names, not the cars they offered. I personally check the details of dealers and cars entered into the database for accuracy to make my website the most reliable for local used car listings.

What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)

If I can't eventually offload it, I'll keep it for the income.

How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?

I think I've achieved a lot in the month the site has been online. I'm happy with it.

If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?

I would hire data inputters and purchase TV commercial time.

If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?

If I hired data inputters.

What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?

Lack of consistency between used car dealers. Some dealers just don't provide vital bits of information on their cars that others do, resulting in gaps in the database.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Retrieving usable information from some car dealers.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Word of mouth, definitely.

How has running your website differed from your expectations?

It turned out better than I originally expected. I think many people will find it a useful resource.

How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?

A month so far. I will personally keep it running until I sell it.

What is your background in this industry?

I've no background in used cars, but I've been in web development professionally for three or four years. Originally from the UK, I worked as a web developer for several companies who sold products to the UK market via their websites. I now intend to continue my career here in Wisconsin.

BuyBigTires.com Interview

By Interviewer at 07/18/07 19:59
Name of your website?

BuyBigTires.com

Your name?

Kurt Hartman

Your Location (city, etc)

Clayton

When did you start your website and why?

Our website came into existence in September of last year.

We are in a niche industry(we sell OTR Tires) and it is a worldwide industry. A simple brick and mortar operation was not going to help us reach our customer, so a website coupled with an PPC campaign was an obvious choice.

Please give us a short summary of your website, business model, etc

Our website seeks to market off-the-road(OTR) tires in an international fashion. There is a shortage of available tires in our industry, and the website is used to collect contacts, and also to source new supply.

We have a physical location to store our tires in, and an office staff to handle order fulfillment, billing, and the like.

In the beginning, our orders were something like 5% of our total gross income, now they approach 30-40% a month, including repeat business from clients on the website.

The investment has definitely paid off.

What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?

Figuring out ways to add valuable content to our site. In a niche industry, you are beginning with very specific content, and so it is harder to dig down much deeper than you already are.

We have found ways to do this by adding a blog, and are working on a technical information database to add value.

What has been the easist part of operating your website?

Managing our PPC campaign. From day one, it has brought rewards and customers in automatically.

What was your biggest mistake?

My first design of the site was completely in Flash. We were of no use to any search engines until I redesigned it five months in.

We were considered invisible by every search engine imaginable, until I finally had to learn CSS from scratch.

Who maintains your website and why?

I do. Mainly from a cost and understanding perspective. While you can get someone who is better at web design than I am, nobody cares as much about the content and the user as someone who is interacting with them on a daily basis.

Tell us how your business has benefitted from your website?

We have faster and more specific information about our customers, their needs, and offers than we would otherwise.

Our website has taken us from relative obscurity, to competing with the leaders in our industry.

What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?

I see more and more people becoming comfortable with the use of the internet as a vehicle for commerce. Information has been monetized, and given away more freely than at any time in the history of the world.

I think the personalization of search will eventually go too far, and that there may be a large backlash as a result.

The internet will soon be entirely wireless and/or wired internet connections will be outrageously fast.

What are your views on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Anybody who isn't on the front page of Google for their key category is going to whine about SEO. The truth is, while it's not bad, what a search engine wants to see is anyone's guess.

Unless you wrote the algorithm, SEO is still somewhat of a mystery.

What are your views on Search Engines? Have they helped or hindered your website?

They have helped, through PPC, and we're starting to see more and more organic traffic every day. I don't know how they could possibly hinder anyone's website.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

A PPC campaign. The most bang for the buck period. I know some companies pay as much as 15-$20 a click for very high search volume keywords. A niche market brings much better returns for far less cost-per-click.

What method has been least successful for promoting your website?

Link Farms. They've pretty much been blasted out of every search engine's algorithm.

What would you like to see change with respect to the internet?

I would like to see some of the Web 2.0 sites differentiate themselves in terms of features, and do away with others. I would like to see MySpace disappear, and for someone to find a word to use besides "blogosphere".

Which e-commerce site has the most unique business model?

I would have to threadless.com. It incorporates the spirit of web 2.0(User generated action and content) and e-commerce. By supporting the artists(who submit and get a portion of the proceeds for each design) and the customer(who gets a unique, limited edition piece of art) they make a handy profit.

Personal Auto Advisors Interview

By Interviewer at 07/18/07 11:44
Name of your website?

Personal Auto Advisors

Your name?

Bryan

Your Location (city, etc)

Olathe

When did you start your website and why?

We started this site because we have seen so much bad information on cars & car repair that we felt someone needed to establish an accurate and reliable site with correct information.

Please give us a short summary of your website, business model, etc

We are out to provide a service to people that don't want to hassle with auto service, or who need expert advice to help them along with the D.I.Y. side of things. We provide full automotive assistance using our experience in the industry to assist consumers in getting the best deals possible & only fixing what is needed.

What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?

Marketing... once people hear about our service, they understand the benefits, but it is hard to get information to people. The only other thing hard so far is trying to put all of our information in a short and readable webpage, we simply offer so much it is hard to describe.

What has been the easist part of operating your website?

Performing the service at the level we demand. Since our marketing is down, we have more time than we know what to do with right now. I am hoping this will change soon and allow us to work hard to provide

What was your biggest mistake?

Thinking that people would see the information and accept that what we offer is valuable. There is a lot of explaining that needs to be done before people realize the benefit of what we provide.

Who maintains your website and why?

I do, I am the one in the family with the computer experience as well as automotive experience & I love dealing with computers. It works out quite well and I enjoy my 18 hour days.

Tell us how your business has benefitted from your website?

We now have much more exposure and we are already seeing the benefit with more customers realizing what we have to offer.

What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?

I enjoy doing business online greatly, I shop online and do a whole lot of research on items/services before I buy. We realize that many people are doing this now because it gives them an opportunity to take their time and determine whether a service/product is for them.

What are your views on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

I think search engines are going in the right direction. It used to take experience to sift through all the junk that popped up on Search Engines that were in no way related to the keywords typed. The new rules or guidelines are making a big difference in allowing people to find what they are seaching for.

What are your views on Search Engines? Have they helped or hindered your website?

Search engines do nothing but help. Most customers will find you buy using a search engine. They are very necessary and all have many great features.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Pay Per Click advertising. When you get listed in the sponsered results area, people see you. The only thing I don't like about it is paying for people to come by that had no interest anyway... but all advertising has downsides.

What method has been least successful for promoting your website?

Flyers. We did a massive local campaign going door to door and car to car posting flyers. It led to phone calls, but not many hits on the website.

What would you like to see change with respect to the internet?

Nothing... We need to leave it alone, there are too many good things that could be ruined by outside involvement or government guidelines.

What is the biggest benefit you offer to your customers?

We offer peace of mind. We save people money everyday, sometimes we are able to help people perform a repair on their car that a shop would have charged hundreds of dollars for. Knowledge is power, and we have a lot of knowledge to share. We are teachers, and enjoy helping people learn about their car and the automotive business as a whole.
