While Toyota is the modern day idea of a every nations national car brand, it was different some 50 or 60 years ago. Mostly in Asia, Volkswagen have already created a name and even made a mark in every country it had been, most especially in the Philippines.
Recently, I was in Subic Bay, Philippines and I was in awe at the sight of the cars that welcomed me. It all started with the luxury car that serviced me to Subic, a new Volkswagen Phaeton. It was brilliant and really look great in its royal silver color. This modern model form the German automaker really resembles almost a perfect masterpiece. The speed, the comfortability - all are commendable.
However, upon arrival to Subic, the modern car era swiftly went off my mind. As I went out of the car, a bunch of vintage Volkswagens welcomed me. The parking lot where we parked is full of VWs everywhere.
When I got to roam the place, I saw that Volkwagen Type 3 Notchback and it made me smile. Its been quite a while since I last saw a Type 3. It was still in perfect condition. You wouldn't even think its a car of the 60's! Its still shiny and definitely still has its charms in it. I also saw VW caravans, sedan types and even a Type 3 fastback coupe version.
But if we are talking about Volkswagen in the Philippines, the one car that ruled and still rules them all in VW's Type 1, the Beetle! If it will be ranked, it is undoubtedly the most famous car in the country up until now. A very distinctive creation of Volkswagen is also the Type 2, or the Kombi Bus! Who would forget those buses in different colors? There was even a time in history, according to my book, where people goes on a picnic, or a camp and they all a Volkswagen Bus.
These vintage Volkswagens are keeping the memories alive for those fans of the VW masterpieces. The legacy these cars have left will always stay in every man's heart. Seriously.
