Draining oil when replacing filter

On 07/04/08 00:18, Bob Grumbine asked the following question:

error at the parts store about which oil filter to sell to me. Went to put the new filter on after draining the engine oil and found it wouldn't fit. Had to reuse the old filter and fill with new oil to get the car to run back to the parts store. Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS with 2.5L SOHC engine if that's relevant.

Question: with four quarts of fresh oil, can the old filter function adequately? Or do I need to drain that fresh oil and start over to replace the reused oil filter?
