Its been quite awhile since Ford venture into making small cars. They have been busy for the last few years making big ones, like their SUV's and trucks. But by 2010, America will once again be welcoming a new member of the Ford family, not really a new one because Fiesta was have already been made three decades ago, but rather a new version.
Ford's concept car for this sub-compact model is named Verve but when it entered global production, it became the all new Fiesta. It will start to enter European markets this fall, pretty much earlier than its debut on US. This is because the already made 3 and 5 door hatch versions will be sold to Europe while the not-yet made sedan versions are the ones to be sold in the US and also in Asia. Ford management are still figuring out if the hatch versions will also be a hit in the American market, where mostly sedans rule. The sedan look will surely not be far from the hatch version in the photo. Just take off the back door and lower it, give it a little butt, you got the sedan.
Ford did this to answer the demands the public are throwing. There are already available sub-compact models on rival manufacturers. The Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, and Toyota Yaris. All of these are tagged by manufacturers as B Class cars. At first America did not care about these cars. Then crude oil passed $100 a barrel and gas prices approached four bucks a gallon. Now they are rushing for these cars that lead Ford to revive their Fiesta.
There are no details yet about its specs but the Fiesta for Europe shares front-drive chassis architecture with the Mazda2, running a 1.6-liter four that comes with the option of having it manual or automatic transmissions.
