It's official, GM's Hummer brand will be sold to China's Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company as they have arrived and signed officially in a definitive agreement to purchase Hummer from General Motors. But far from speculations months ago, the Hummer brand will stay in the United States, opposed to reports the plants will be moved to China.
The Chinese company seems to have found a way to penetrate the American automotive market as they will also be getting the dealership networks of the brand aside from the rights to manufacture the "purpose-built" vehicle.
The Hummer executive line up will stay with the company even if its under a new management with James Taylor retaining his position as Hummer CEO.
Hummer will be headquartered in Detroit and original plants in Mishawaka, Indiana and Shreveport, Louisiana, who manufactures the H2 and H3 / H3T respectively will be contracted by the Chinese company to still create the Hummer for them. The contract will end on June 2011 and they have the chance to extend it for another year. After that, it's still not clear if an extension is possible or they will have to look for a new one or opt to bring Hummer production to their land.
Having said this, Hummer will officially be an American-built, Chinese-owned vehicle.
Hummer, when it first debuted, is a highly acclaimed purpose-built vehicle. Originally designed as a vehicle with military background, Hummer went on to become as a fashion vehicle for the rappers and rockstar kids in Hollywood.
