NHTSA On the Hyundai Elantra Investigation

By Tony Stark at 07/22/08 07:43

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that they have already received more than 500 complains for Hyundai's Elantra models. The complains are chorus, its all about the airbag malfunctions in 2001-2002 models.

Both Hyundai and NHTSA have collected data of 22 Elantra car crash of which 15 of these resulted in grave injuries and 2 fatal crash - all said to have been because of air bag malfunctions.

The reason for the air bag malfunction is found to be due to poorly placed cup holders. There were over 9,000 warranty claims that have been made according to Hyundai. If a recall of Elantras will be issued, around 150,000 of these cars are involved.

Another issue NHTSA is looking at the moment are engine stalling complaints for the 2007-008 models. There are 4 complaints where one resulted in a crash with injuries. The culprit is said to have been the faulty fuel. There are about 167,000 2007-2008 Elantras roaming the American highways today.

Here is a short video review of Hyundai's Elantra.

My 2008 elantra has hesitated on me on two occassions. The dealer says they cannot find a problem with car because by the time they get to servicing the vehicle, it is no longer stalling. I was almost hit from behind twice. The recall does not apply to my vehicle because it "was produced in another plant". I have complained to Hyundai and the dealership. Now they want me to leave the car with them for a couple of days.

There has to be something wrong with my fuel pump as well. Are they waiting for a fatality to occur?

My 2008 Elantra is run ok so far. I always smell something like it is running hot after about 30 minutes of highway driving. I have kept up all the maintenance. I told the dealership about the smell and asked them to check it out during a routine oil change. They claim to not find anything wrong with it. I also noticed that sometimes when I begin to accelerate my elantra seems to lose power. It has already started to "shimmy" even though I've had the tires rotated twice. I am mad at myself because I wish I had shopped around longer. I did my research, and Hyundai was ranked third with only Honda and Toyota above. That was through Consumer Reports so I trusted it. Now I fear that I will be stuck with a lemon in another year or so.

2008 Elantra is a piece of junk

At 2500 miles, my water pump died on me. At 5300 miles, msy alternator had to be replaced.
