For nine straight years, silver has taken the spot as the most popular color for all vehicles around the world. According to PPG Industries, a major company that deals with car finishes, silver remains the most purchased car color in all continents.
“What helps drive silver’s popularity are all of the innovative effects that really make silver shine … much more than just a simple gray,” according to Jane E. Harrington, PPG manager for color styling and automotive coatings.
“Silver tones work well with today’s tinted metallic textural looks. The diversity of silver, from subtle hue shifts to dimensional metallic flake appearances, works with a variety of vehicle styles.” she added.
In North America, it was said that 1 out of every 4 cars purchased are of silver color. There are times that unavailability of the silver color for the vehicle type makes the buyer decides not to buy the car at all. North American buyers also tend to ask dealerships for a silver color in advance even before the vehicle arrive in the dealership.
In all, 25% of all new North American cars sold were in silver, a 20% increase from 2008's ratings. White follows immediately with 18%, black 16% and red trails to 4th place with 12%.
Silver is even more popular in other parts of the world. European cars in silver color totaled to 35% for 2009. They also seem to choose a differently than Americans. Black trails to no. 2 spot in Europe with 22% while blue and white are tied at no.3 with 13%.
In Asia, 34% of cars sold in 2009 are in silver, deeming it still is the undisputed color for vehicles, for 9 straight years.
