Even before the the Prius, the Insight and obviously before the Volt, there is one hybrid car that was already traveling the paths of the earth, not because of high oil prices but because of innovation, India's Reva electric cars. It wasn't generally a commercial success when it first debuted in 2000, but India's Reva Electric Car Company, Co., the maker of these Reva electric cars, is one reason why India can say they are the initiator of the current trend of electric cars. And the fact that their Reva company is the first in the world to commercially release an electric car gives them another feeling of being special.
The Reva company is currently the leading electric car manufacturer in the world and is still based on its home city in Bangalore, India. It is also now being sold in the British car market under the name G-Wiz i. The Reva electric car is intended to be used as a city car, achieving maximum performance if used for short city trips.
The Reva car is a hatchback type city car that only measures 2.6 metres (8ft 6in) long, 1.3 m (4ft 3in) wide and 1.5m (4ft 11in) high. Though small, it accommodate 4 passengers, 2 average sized adults in front and two children at the back. If you do not have children, you can fold down the thing that separates the fron and back seat so you can increase cargo space. The cargo and passenger weight limit of the Reva is 270kg. It maximum speed is 70 km/h (45 mph).
The Reva, or more commonly G-Wiz i in the UK, have been featured many times in the no. 1 car show on television, Top Gear. Although it was modified and defeated a Ford Mustang Shelby GT, it was still named as the Worst Car of the Year 2007.
The Reva electric car is not yet available but can be exported to the United States for use as a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle. It sells for MSRP £7,699–£7,999 more or less $14.5k in the US.
