United States Council for Automotive Research Due to Set Standards

By Rick B at 04/20/09 20:59

During the SAE Conference being held in Detroit on April 20-23rd, new standards will be set for the high-voltage wiring and connectors that are incorporated into plug-in automobiles.  The standards are considered long overdue, and will help to save U.S. automakers and consumers money in the growing electric car market.

Existing standards only cover specifications for vehicles with wiring capacities up to 20V, while the goal is to allow for a uniform design capable of handling systems running up to 600V.  This will allow automakers to avoid the costly testing and planning that goes into coming up with proprietary hardware.  Also, significant cost savings will be had when all suppliers start manufacturing and competing for uniform parts.

Other entities that will benefit from this conference are utility companies and foreign auto makers.  For a full story and related news, the full article can be read.
