When the American automaker, Chrysler, filed for Chapter 11 and was taken by the Italian auto group, Fiat, car enthusiasts were all thinking of one thing, "Will Fiat kill the Dodge Viper?". Well, that question is still yet to be answered.
It is an undeniable fact that the Dodge Viper is one of Chrysler's best creations. It is an American icon in the American motoring industry since it was first released in 1992. It also holds the current fastest lap time record in Germany's famous track, the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
Rumors spread that Fiat will probably kill the Viper brand simply because they find it as a direct competition to their Ferrari and Maserati brands. Although Dodge Viper is targetting a different market, it still posed a threat to Ferrari and Maserrati for some reason. Maybe because of the down economy and sporty people can't afford F and M's price tags and would go for the cheaper Viper.
Viper fans around the world are all hoping the brand will not die in the hands of Fiat. Everybody are disappointed when Chrysler failed to sell the brand for just $10 million, thus resulting to the handing over of the brand to Fiat. It is reported that Devon Motors is the sole bidder for the brand for just $5.5 million.
I will never see Viper as a direct competition to Ferrari and Maserati. The three all has their own characteristics. I hope Fiat recognize that point and let the Viper name live.
