This morning I attended a marathon race in my home town. There were hundreds of people who joined and it was generally a successful event even though it rained during the run. My parents insist that I stay for the night but I told them I have to do something in my house. So instead of having me commute for home, my father just presented to give me a ride.
A few minutes after we departed from my parent's house, we saw my childhood friend who was walking on the sidewalk. We called him and said we will give him a ride so he doesn't have to walk. He was persistent that he doesn't need a ride since he is just going to the his sister's house. But as far as I can remember, his sister's house is more than 20 blocks away!
As persistent as he is, my father eventually persuaded him to ride with us. It's been more than 5 years since I last saw him. He seated on the back, while I constantly talking to him. He's like stuttering everytime he answers me. I looked at the mirror and saw slightly shivering. After a few minutes, we finally reached his sister's house and he bid us farewell and said thanks.
My father then told me that about 4 years ago, about the same time I left our house to study on the nation's capital, my friend got involved in a heavy car crash in his father's car. The accident left his father in a vegetative state and form then on, my friend suffered from tremendous fear of riding in cars. Now I get it why he is like that. I actually never really thought there's a kind of fear in riding cars!
I asked my father why did he insist on giving him a ride when he know he has a phobia in riding cars. He said my friend needed to overcome his fear of cars by showing him and letting him feel that riding car is not always tragic.
I plan to visit my friend one of these days, cause I think he needs someone to talk to. I'll take him to places we've been when were still little kids. But we will just walk, as I do not want to force him about riding cars quickly.
