Of Food And Fuel

By Sam Heisin at 05/01/08 22:44

history Why Mexico?
On the late night news, reports said that riots in different parts of the world had sprung up, mainly due to food shortage.

Food riots have occurred in Ethiopia, Indonesia, Egypt, Cameroon, and other countries. In the Philippines, armed polices are guarding the rice markets in Manila while military men are in charged of keeping the rice buying hours peaceful in the provinces. Access cards for the poorest families were also given so only those who really needed rice the most can buy the government supplied rice which is cheaper than the ordinary. Even in America, some rice institutes are regulating the people who can only buy rice. Even what we call the poor man's rice, the corn grain, already increased in price.

For the past few years, men have been developing fuels out of these foods, that gives us the idea that our commitment to save the world from oil pollution and being dependent on it also cause a major disaster, hunger. Bio-fuels like ethanol coming from corn is said to be one of the reason why hunger occurred.

The food intended for eating is turned to bio fuel. The Rico Gas, a kind of bio fuel that is made from rice also contributes to the food shortage all around the world. Although ethanol is more widely use, both these two gases can be considered as the culprit. We burn these foods as fuel, rather than eating it. The fuel products made from these foods however helped the environment is clearing pollution, but the end result gave humankind hunger.

An article I read this morning in the Manila Bulletin, a newspaper in the Philippines, said we can use other forms of energy but we must now stop using biofuels. Alternative ways like hydro powered and thermal energies can be use and cars that use electricity as the main source are far more better. Although these types of energies can still make backfires, at least the result in not directly on us, and will not hinder us with our food supplies.

The move of major car companies on developing electric hybrid cars is appreciated worldwide and we hope more of these will be developed and produced.

I think this opens the door to more healthy food for people and more commercial farming for the big businesses who are in love with pesticides and genetic modification of "food".

Let those big farmers take over the production of crops to be used for fuels. Let them use whatever pesticides, chemicals and genetic modifications they want.

For the rest of us, let's start focusing on home and community hydroponics to grow the food we eat in a natural, organic way.

We can shift our energy dependence away from the oil producing regions and shift our health back to basic, real, good food.
