An Interview With The Flash

By Car-Addict at 02/25/08 14:17

Don't get the title wrong, this isn't an interview with the superhero with the same name. The Flash I am talking about here is different. An old man, though famous for being the fastest driver, at least for his age, in the Philippines.

I got the chance to talk to him yesterday because of the heavy rain. I was in the lobby of the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City when I spotted him.

He looks old, but you can still sense the aura of being famous and being rich, lol. I started our conversation by asking the time, and he answered politely, a thing I wasn't expecting for a famous old man. Then we talk continuously. He is already 74 years old. His fame started when he was 69 years old when he drove his son's yellow open top Porsche. People along the country's longest highway, EDSA, noticed him and started making a fuzz about his fast driving despite of his age. So the local TV network, GMA, looked for him and interviewed him. An instant celebrity, and the rest, as they say, is history.

As our conversation started to deepen, he told me he just learned driving at the age of 56. Pretty old eh? And because he was born from a poor family, they don't have any car to practiced on. So he then worked hard to achieve his goals, until he put his children all to college and eventually graduate and now all professionals.

He retired from working at the age of 56 and there he started studying how to drive. His cars were not for sports and hes tired of looking at them so he borrowed his son's sports car and trailed the EDSA highway where his good fate begun.

He is so down to earth and very humble. I admire him so much. He even taught me ways how to drive safely especially for an amateur like me.

It really is an amazing day.
