Q&A: Engine Color; 1954 Chevrolet 3600, 6 Cylinder 235 Engine

By Blog Answers at 01/05/09 11:48

On 12/15/08 13:08, jerry williams asked the following question:

I own an all original 1954, 6 cylinder 235 engine. Chevrolet 3600 series.my question is this. What is the correct engine color for this truck? Some have told me that black is the correct color, and others have said blue, and yet another has told me that the correct color is gray.I certainly would be grateful for the correct color. Thanks, Jerry Williams

First of all I would like to congratulate you on a fine engine, Jerry. You don't say whether you have just the engine or if you have the whole truck, but I assume just the engine.

The 235 engine in this year for the 3600 series is a light duty truck engine and was originally painted gray. It should have a decal on the rocker cover that states "Thriftmaster 235". This was the same for the 3100, 3600, 3800 and 4000 series engines.

This is as opposed to the 5000 and 6000 series and the forward control models, which have a "Loadmaster 235" decal. This engine was also an option for the 4000 series. It was also painted gray.

The optional engine for the 5000 and 6000 series in the 235 was painted green and had a decal on the rocker cover that said "Jobmaster 261".

My father had one of these trucks when I was younger, although it had been restored by someone else before he purchased it. The engine had been painted black by that person, but after doing research, my father found the information above and shared it with me.

It was a great truck and a classic. I hope this information has helped you.

is blue. You can order it from Classic Parts

part number 88-006it is $39.95 a quart.

Their phone number is 1-800-741-1678. I'm

I just recently (yesterday) bought a 1953 3800. My research shows that the engine block (#T603A) is from 1954-55 but it is painted orange but I see hints of blue in other places. The trans is a 4 speed. I just got it running (very rough) and the brakes working). The ride around the block was interesting as 1st and 2nd gear only were needed for a few seconds. I have photos is you want to share your email address. I promise no scams...just sharing photos of my new baby.
