The other day a friend of mine was talking to me about adding some aftermarket modifications to his car. He just bought 2002 Mercury Cougar XR. The car is already fast as it is, he just wants to add a little extra "push" to it. He was telling me that he wanted to put a Blower in his car. He said that not only will it save him money at the gas pumps, but it will give him more power and some much needed "street cred".
I disagreed with his choice in wanting to put in the Blower. Instead, I suggested he get a Turbo installed on his car. A few years ago I bought a car that had already had an aftermarket Blower installed. After I had the car for a year I got rid of it and bought another car. This car had the same engine in it as my previous car before the aftermarket Blower. Instead of going with the Blower again, a friend suggested I get a Turbo instead. So I did. I found out that a Turbo, in my opinion, had some better qualities, and less disadvantages than a Blower. Here are a few of them:
Disadvantages:
Turbo:
Blower:
- Requires another belt for installation.
- More expensive to rebuild.
- Uses its own oil.
Advantages:
Turbo:
- You will still get the full full economy.
- Its not always being used, only when you want it to.
Blower:
- Quicker throttle response. (gives power from both the top and bottom of motor)
- People can hear the "cool" whining noise the engine makes.
Now I am not trying to say one is better than the other. I just think my friend should maybe find out a little more information on both modifications before he decides on which one to get installed. If anyone would like to add to the disadvantages or advantages to either mod, please comment.
you dont have to wait for a blower to kick in they work straight away quicker throttle response is what you wont if you wont to save money at the pumps buy
a ford xr6 turbo
turbos take to long to power up
i want power right away
thats why the blower is the best and it sound so cool.
