China many have reduce the number of cars passing their national highways by half to make sure the Olympic air will be tolerable in time for the Olympics. The air pollution in Beijing have reached a rate of 85-90, a high percentage according to the World Health Organization. WHO stated that any air rate percentage above 50 is risky and a bit dangerous and above 100 is already considered unsafe. The Beijing air is nearing critical level.
To solve this problem, the Chinese government prohibited the use of almost half of the cars in China. But this move actually isn't enough. They need help. And Volkswagen came to the rescue.
In time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the European car maker Volkswagen handed a fleet total of 5,000 green hybrid cars to the Chinese government for use in the world's most awaited sports event.
The chosen models are the Touran EcoFuel (bifuel CNG/gasoline), Magotan 2.0 TDI (6.2 l/100), Magotan BlueMotion (5.1 l/100), the Sagitar 1.4 TSI (6.4 l/100), and the Tiguan 2.0 TDI (6.9 l/100).
The Magotan series is actually the local version of the VW Passat while the Sagitar is just the given Chinese name for the Jetta.
The cars have a unique design that represents the Chinese culture and also shows the combined concept of mobility, winid and street.
The cars handed by VW to China is called the Green Fleet and will mainly be used for services affiliated with the Olympics.
