Anticipating the 5th Generation Chevrolet Camaro

By Tony Stark at 07/20/08 16:27

California, any: Chevrolet Camaro

In 1966, Chevrolet came up with the idea of a car that would compete to the popular Ford Mustangs. In 1967, they introduced the Camaro line. Later when asked what a Camaro is, Chevrolet officials said it was "a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs".

Although Chevrolet's Camaro have not really put down Ford Mustang into its knees, it is interesting to know that at times the Camaro was favored by many over the Mustang. Specially for the design, I prefer it over Ford's. Mustangs are still in production, Camaro stopped its production in 2002 but it will once again make its way back in 2009.

Perhaps the greatest advertisement for the Camaro line is when it was used in the film Transformers. One of the main characters, Bumblebee, is an old yellow Camaro, perhaps a 1976 model or earlier. BUt along the movie, he was renovated and eventually became a newer one, a 5th generation of the Camaro that is still to be release on 2009.

Maybe the closest encounter I had with a Camaro, aside from watching it through Transformers, is by playing with it in Gran Turismo when I was younger. Actually it's one of my favorite cars in the game. It was also featured on Need For Speed video games. Later I found that the Camaro look alike cars in Gran Theft Auto (GTA) are indeed Camaros but were renamed.

In 2009, the fifth generation of the Camaro will soon be mass produced and is expected to go on sale the fall of the same year. I was laughing hard at the statement given by Ed Peper, Chevrolet's General Manager regarding the convertible version of the Camaro fifth generation - "For some of us, an emotional bond was formed when we introduced the Camaro coupe last year. It is magnificent. But now this year, if this Camaro convertible doesn't make your heart beat faster, you should see either your optometrist or your cardiologist, because you have a problem."

Seems like we should really expect something grand from Chevy for their new Camaros. But I think I will not let my grand father see that convertible Camaro. Everything that will make his heart beat faster is prohibited or otherwise instead of visiting the car store for a new Camaro, it will be the hospital we are heading.
