'Papa John' Pays $250,000 To Buy Back His 1971 Chevrolet Camaro

09/09/09 07:42

I was going through the news this morning when I came across a very interesting, slightly weird, news article. John Schnatter, the founder of the popular pizza chain "Papa Johns", was finally reunited with his 1971 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. The interesting part to me is that he sold the car in 1983, and now 26 years later, he was on a mission to buy the car back. Now the weird part is that he paid $250,000 to get it back! He sold it for only $2,800 back in 1983!

The reason he sold his car in the first place was to help save his father's tavern in Jeffersonville, Indiana. With the left over money he had from helping his dad, he decided to use the rest to jump start his own pizza business. Papa John's is now one of the most popular worldwide pizza places! After years of trying to locate his beloved Camaro, he decided to offer $250,000 to who ever found his car.

The person who had originally bought his car back in 83' watched an interview with John on TV before an NFL football game. After that they searched the internet for details about this "car search". They finally ended up on a car blog site which led Papa John's to them. Turns out that the Camaro was only sold twice more after John sold it in the first place. So finally Papa John was reunited with his Gold and Black Chevrolet Camaro. Not only did the people who sold John back his car get $250,000, but the original buyers who helped him hunt down the car was rewarded with $25,000! After finally having his beloved car delivered to him, Papa John explained that seeing the again for the first time, "kind of hit me emotionally".
