I was in a conversation with a friend just a while ago when he mentioned that he recently saw an auction site for a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL with a gullwing door. I am a vintage car fanatic, and I love cars with gullwing doors so I immediately visit the site.
Indeed it was a gullwing Mercedes-Benz. It really look nice and it still looks way way better that the modern cars we have now. It's so exotic that you actually wanted to drive the car by just looking at it.
The Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing is actually one of my most favorite vintage sports car. It reigned the roads during its time and I recall my father would boast of driving one in his younger days.
Aside from having the beautifully crafted gull-wing doors, the 300Sl is also known as the first gasoline-powered car equipped that comes with a fuel injection directly to the combustion chamber.
It is highly considered as one of the most beautiful cars of all time. Sports Car International ranked the 300SL as the no. 5 sports car of all time. It is also once of the most expensive cars to collect, with current price ranging from $400,000 above. I love the car, but I will not spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for it.
The 300Sl was initially produced for car racing. In 1954, they started making commercial versions of it and a total success, specially in the US Market where 80% of the 300Sl produced were sold. This makes the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing the first ever car of Mercedes-Benz to have been sold in bulk outside the company's parent country, Germany.
The 300SL's spirit can still be seen in modern designs such as the new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Gullwing which was inspired by these 1950s car.
